You can definitely have a powerful exhaust fan right on top of your range to vent all the smoke and fumes out of your kitchen, and you can definitely save your money that you’ll otherwise spend on a modern range hood, but that’s not a good choice.
Not when you cook the kind of cuisines that are spicy, use a lot of oil and leave a lot of grease and smoke in the air.
Totally not recommended when it’s about a restaurant’s kitchen.
And the biggest reason why some people ditch range hoods is that not everyone wants the pain and hassle of ducted hoods.
This is where ductless range hoods come into play.
This is a review of 7 best ductless range hoods – and much more than that.

Best Ductless Range Hoods
For this review, I picked top 7 ductless range hoods – based on the number of sales and reviews, positive rating, Amazon’s Choice tag and other such tags – and most importantly their features.
Some of these range hoods have already been reviewed in our main article on best range hoods and other articles, so kindly excuse me for the feeling of sameness that you might have.
Before we get down to the nitty gritty of each and every of these ductless range hoods, let us take a look at our best picks based on different sub-categories e.g. Best Fan Speed.
Broan-NuTone 413004 – Best Overall
There are not many range hood manufacturing companies that can challenge Cosmo’s hegemony in the range hoods niche, but one of those that can is Broan. This one is what I consider best overall because of thousands of sales and positive reviews, Amazon’s Choice tag and its amazing features.
Cosmo COS-QS75 – Best Fan Speed
Frankly speaking, fan speed options should not be the only reason why this range hood should be considered best. There are other reasons too, but its 4-speed fan brings it to the top of this category.
Hauslane Chef Series WM-639 – Best Wall-Mount
This is a ductless range hood, but such a hood can be wall mount as well as under-cabinet. Among the wall-mount category this one is the best ductless range hood.
Broan-NuTone F403004 – Best Under-Cabinet
Just like in the case of wall-mount ones, this is a ductless hood, but one that fits right under the cabinet. So, in case you want the best ductless range hood that can fit under a cabinet, go for this one.

And now what you were waiting for …
Well, before I review each and every of the selected range hoods, lemme talk a little about the review criteria and framework.
So, my reviews are based on hands-on testing of 1 or 2 of these products, expert opinions that I take on all of them and the reviews that verified customers of these products give on Amazon’s platform.
When it comes to framework, it is three-fold. The reviews are based on most important features, pros and cons, and the answers of the most frequently asked questions.
1. Broan-NuTone 413004 – Best Recirculating Range Hood
This ductless range hood is what I consider best overall because of thousands of positive reviews and sales. It has a sleek, stylish and slim profile – mainly because it fits under a cabinet. The control panel is simple and easy to use.
When we review range hoods we do so based on how they work and how they are fit or installed in a kitchen. In terms of how it works, we know that it is ductless. In terms of how it is installed – well, it is an under-cabinet hood. This capacity is the reason why this range hood has such a sleek and slim profile.
One 75W Bulb
The lamp of this range hood can host a 75watts bulb (which is not included in the purchase) and yes, it’s just one bulb but you can do the maths when you compare two 2watts each LED lights that every other range hood has to offer with one 75watts one. There’s no comparison. The A19 type of bulb is recommended for the lamp.
Charcoal Filter for Ductless Filtration
This detail is important. How a ductless range hood works? Well, it sucks the air, has it go through the filters, recycle all the smoke and fumes and whatnot into clean air and recirculate the same inside your kitchen. The carbon or charcoal filters are used in ductless range hoods. Charcoal filters are very effective and they take roughly 6 months before you have to replace them.
The motor that works behind the stainless-steel body is a 2-speed powerful motor. The motor remains permanently lubricated. 2-speed fans allows you to sync the fan-speed to the kind of cooking you’ve got going (and in case you need it for a restaurant or for a home kitchen).
The control panel is on the front – to the left side of the filtration grill – and it has two simple and easy to use rocker switches. The first one is for the fan-speed. You can press it right or left to toggle between two speeds. The other switch is for LED bulb – switch it on or off. Rocker switches leave no room for the mistake.
This range hood can work with any kitchen appliance that is ADA-compliant. In case you do not know, ADA means Americans with Disabilities Act. In short if there is a range or other compatible appliance made for disabled Americans, this hood is compliant with that.
2. Broan-NuTone F403004 – Best Recirculating Range Hood
In case you want a ductless hoot, but you dislike those big wall-mount or island ones, and you want an under-cabinet one with minimum “noise” and a slim profile, this Broad hood is even better than the one that I’ve reviewed above. Also, it has got an Amazon’s Choice tag for amazing features and thousands of positive reviews.
Powerful Hood Insert
In case you don’t know, a hood inset is the exhaust fan that is the real thing that works behind the big stainless-steel structure that we call a range hood. This one comes with a very powerful fan (a 2.5amps and 300watts one) that provides enough suction doesn’t matter whether the kitchen you need this hood for it a home kitchen or a restaurant’s kitchen.
Protective Lamp for a 75W Bulb
Just like it was with the hood that I have reviewed above, this one also comes with a protective lamp whose transparent casing provides more than enough light for your cooking. It can host a 75watts incandescent bulb (which is not included and which you need to buy separately). A19 type of bulb is highly recommended for this rig.
Aluminum Mesh Filter
Now this detail is tricky – only a couple of the range hoods on this list come in a plug n’ play ductless mode. Most of them, including this one and excluding the one that I’ve reviewed above, come as ducted hoods. Those hoods have aluminum mesh filters that you have to replace with separately provided/sold carbon or charcoal filters. So, keep this in mind that you’d have to buy the charcoal filters to turn this into ductless hood.
Simple to Use Control Panel
Just like the other hood that I’ve reviewed before this one, this also has a very simple to use control panel. It has rocker switches and you can never be wrong while using those switches. One of them is to switch on or off the light, while the other one is for the two-speed fan. Keep it in the mid and fan is off, press the right side for low and left for high speed.
This range hood provided a 4-way functionality. You already know two of them. It comes as a ducted hood, but if you want it to work as a ductless one, you can buy charcoal filters and change the way how it works. The two other functionalities are actually 2 different choices that you have within ducted mode – whether you want it in a 3-1/4” by 10” vertical or horizontal form or you prefer a 7” round vertical functionality.
6.5 Sones Noise
So, this hood is actually a pretty quiet one. If 6.5 sones is hard to understand (coz your Apple watch shows sound measurements in dB/dBA and not in Sones), do know that 6.5 Sones is roughly 54.5dB which is way lower than 65dB which is equal to the noise a normal human convo creates.
3. Cosmo COS-5MU36 – Best Ductless Under Cabinet Range Hood
Here comes a Cosmo. You cannot do a breakdown of best range hoods in any category without including a couple of Cosmo range hoods. This one made it to this list only because of a bundle of amazing features, slim profile and hundreds of positive reviews on Amazon.
Slim Under-Cabinet Design
So, this is yet another under-cabinet range hood. It can be screwed to a wall too. Due to its under-cabinet design, it has a very slim and sleek profile. It does not at all look like those big, heavy and massive hoods that look alien in modern kitchens.
The hood insert is a powerful one and there are 3 speeds to choose from. This is a powerful motor, but even with all this power the noise that this range hood generates is at maximum 56dB. 56dB is way lesser than 65dB which most of the range hoods generate and which is equal to normal human conversation’s sound. Even then, you can pick the lowest fan speed to reduce the noise a few more notches. Also, 3 speeds means better freedom to sync fan speed with the kind of cooking you’ve got going – when compared with 2-speed fans.
Multi-Layered Aluminum Mesh Filters
As you know, almost all Cosmo range hoods are convertible ones. They come in a ducted mode and you can change them to ductless by a) buying separately sold charcoal filters, b) then opening the unit and removing the aluminum mesh filters, c) changing switch position (on back) from ducted to ductless, and d) installing the carbon filtration kit (with charcoal filters). However, if you want to stick to ductless functionality, do know that multilayered filters are the best considering how they catch more grease and take less washes.
5” Round Duct
Again, in case you want to go back to ducted mode or you never actually shift from ducted (default) to ductless mode, you should know that this thing is compatible with a 5” duct hole – coz, obviously, it comes with a 5” round duct.
Made of 430-Grade and 20-Gauge Stainless-Steel
When we talk about things made of steel, it is important to know whether the steel is made of industrial-grade type to fight corrosion or not, and whether it is thick enough to stay for a long time or not? This one is made of 430-grade stainless-steel that is known for unmatched corrosion-resistance and 20-gauge is thickness which is way better than 16-18 gauge in terms of durability.
Simple Push Button Control Panel
The control panel has push buttons which are easy to use. There are 5 buttons. One to switch on of off the hood, three for three fan-speeds and the 5th one is for LED light.
2 3W LED Lights
Speaking of the LED light, this hood has two lamps that house 2 3watts each LED lights. The good thing about this hood is that lights/bulbs are included in the deal and unlike Broan ones, you do not have to buy em’ separately. Also, these lights are not equal to Broan ones’ 75w bulb, but they beat 1.5watts or 2watts lights that you get with most of other hoods – even with most of Cosmo ones.
5-Year Limited Warranty
There is a 5-year limited warranty that covers your behind in case your hoods functionality is impaired partly or fully.
4. Cosmo 5MU30 – 30 Inch Ductless Range Hood
In terms of functionality, features and everything else, this range hood is exactly like the one I have reviewed before this one. The only major difference is that that one is a 36” hood while this one is a 30” one. This made it to my list because of the same reason as in the case of the previous one: hundreds of positive reviews and promising features.
Slim and Stylish Profile
Whether you wanna screw this to the wall or the dry wall of your cabinet, due to its sleek, stylish and slim profile, this range hood would not stick out as those big and ugly hoods. This is an under-cabinet range hood by category.
This one has a powerful hood insert that has a 3-speed motor. You can make use of 3 speeds in two or more different ways. For example, if you need it for a restaurant that is too busy and needs very good suction, keep it at extreme speed, but for home kitchen, 1 or 2 would be fine. Likewise, if your cooking does not rely on too much spices (smoke and odor) and too much oil (smoke and fumes), you can use lower speeds, but in case your cooking takes too much oil and spices and whatnot, you can use the maximum speed. Lastly, you can use 3 speed settings to reduce the noise. This hood’s maximum noise is already 56dB which is pretty low, but you can reduce it even further by reducing fan’s speed.
This is by default a ducted hood – hence the multilayered aluminum filters. However, you can always transform it to ductless. In case you wanna keep it ducted, do know that multilayered filters collect bigger quantity of fumes and take less washes thus bigger lifetime.
As I said, by default it is a ducted hood. It comes with a 5” round duct for the exhaust vent. In case you want to use this as a ducted hood, do know that you must have a 5” duct hole.
Two 3w LED Lights
Just like the above reviewed hood, this one also has two 3watts each LED lights. The lamps have the bulbs and you don’t have to buy them separately.
Simple to Use Control Panel
The control panel has 5 buttons and it is very simple to use. The push buttons are durable. There is one for hood switch on-off, three for 3 speed settings and one to switch on or off the lights.
Smooth Transformation to Ductless
It is very easy to turn this hood from a ducted one to a ductless one. Buy Cosmo’s carbon filtration kit. Open the hood and remove aluminum filters, change switch position from ducted to ductless and install the carbon filtration kit. Bingo!
Just like all other Cosmo range hoods, this one is also covered by Cosmo’s limited 5-year warranty.
5. Cosmo COS-QS75 –
When it comes to range hoods, there is a lot of buzz, but only two things matter the most: the airflow (CFM) and fan speeds. More fan speeds (3 to 4) means bigger freedom to sync your hood with all types of cooking you can do from brewing tea to cooking some Spanish cuisine with lots of spices and oil – also, from home kitchen to restaurant kitchen, more speeds mean more freedom.
500 CFM Airflow
The airflow that it can create is 500 CFM. This airflow hits pretty much the hot spot between insufficient 200 – 400 CFM and too loud 600 – 900 CFM. This is why it is not as loud as other hoods with similar performance are.
It is by default a ducted hood and you can convert it to ductless by following simple steps. Buy a carbon filtration kit, remove the ARC-FLOW permanent stainless-steel filters, change the switch position from ducted to ductless and install the carbon filtration kit.
Backlit Touch Control Panel
The best thing about this hood is its modern design. It is modern in many ways – for example brushed stainless-steel made slim and smart body of this hood makes it modern, but above all it is because of the control panel. It is a backlit touch control panel from where you can select any of 4 speeds, switch on or off lights and use auto shut-off timer. Also, you get a remote control to make the same choices from a distance.
Made of 430-Grade and 18-Gauge Stainless-Steel
This range hood is made of 430-grade corrosion-resistant stainless-steel which is 18-gauge thick. Not as heavy as 20-gauge, but also not as flimsy as 16 one.
This hood has two 1.5watts each LED lights. Less watts means more power-saving.
Easy to Clean
The hood is easy to clean due to high-quality stainless-steel and in case you stick to ducted mode, the filters are also very easy to clean because they’re dishwasher-friendly.
5-Year Limited Warranty
And this hood too had a 5-year limited warranty.
6. Cosmo 63175 – Ductless Wall Mount Range Hood
In case you want a ductless/convertible hood, but you want a wall-mount one, a Cosmo one – with simple profile and nothing fancy, this is the hood that is perfect for you. Has an extension chimney too.
So, this is a convertible hood and this is why we know the exact CFM. It creates 380 CFM airflow which is not too much but perfectly above average. 75 CFM is what considered not bad and 350 CFM is what considered good.
Speaking of CFM one must admit that big CFM/speed hoods have too much noise too. This hood’s maximum noise is 65dB which is considered equal to normal human conversation’s noise. But that too can be decreased a few notches by selecting lower or lowest speeds on this rig.
Ducted with a Chimney Extension
This is a ducted hood (default setting) and this comes with 6” duct for a 6” hole for exhaust. And there is a chimney that comes in two pieces – you can increase or decrease the size of it easily.
Easy Transformation to Ductless
To turn this by default ducted hood into a ductless one, all you have to do is buy a carbon filtration kit, remove the permanent ARC-FLOW filters that come with this thing, change the switch from ducted to ductless and install the charcoal filters kit.
Made of High-Quality Stainless Steel
Just like all Cosmo hoods, this one is also made of 430-grade corrosion-resistant stainless-steel and the thickness of the material is 20-gauge which is considered best for durability.
2 2watts Each LED Lights
There are 2 LED lights – one on each side – and the lights are 2watts each. While it is not as good as 75watts, it is still better than 1.5w ones.
This rig is also covered by a 5-year limited warranty.
7. Hauslane Chef Series WM-639 – Ductless Island Mount Range Hood
If other couple of wall-mount hoods on this list didn’t please you much, here’s the best ductless, wall-mount range hood that you can get ever. Why? Because its design and shape along with its features make it a very modern hood.
This machine has the highest CFM among all other machines on this list. 750 CFM is actually more than enough. This kind of CFM is what you need when you need a hood for a very busy restaurant’s kitchen.
What makes this CFM acceptable is the 3-speed fan of this hood. Without a 3-speed fan (with only one or two speeds) it’d be too loud. 3 speeds let you sync this hood with your cooking style, choice (cuisines) and needs (home or restaurant).
The look and feel of this hood is a very modern and European one. Instead of making a heavy and bulky stainless-steel hood, they made a curved, tempered glass visor that looks so stylish.
The filters – the aluminum filters of this thing are permanent and they are 100% dishwasher-safe.
Touch Control Panel
The control panel is a touch-sensitive one. You can switch on or off the rig, switch off or on the lights and choose between fan speeds etc. There are two 50watts lights which will definitely illuminate your range better than the 1.5 or 2 or 3watts ones.
The hood can be converted to ductless. You would have to separately buy charcoal filters and remove the permanent ones.
In case you want to keep it ducted, the chimney extension feature can help you increase the size of chimney.
How to Chose Best Ductless Range Hood – Buyer’s Guide
In case you want to know what to look for when buying ductless range hoods, here are some very important points.
Make a checklist of these points, buy a hood that checks most, if not all of the boxes and you’d never regret.
Ductless or Convertible
There is a big difference between rigs that are ductless by default (cannot easily be turned into ducted ones) and those that are convertible.
Ductless hoods (only Broan-NuTone 413004 is a true ductless hood) are by default ductless and they cannot be converted into ducted ones – at least not easily.
Then there are those that are by default ducted, but you can buy carbon filtration kit, remove their filters and turn them into ductless hoods.
Make you decision depending on this fact.
There is only one important point when it comes to buying a ductless hood and I’ve mentioned that above.
But other than that, there are many common sense checks that you have to apply before buying a hood. Here’s a list of them.
CFM – you should get anything between 380 and 550
Fan speeds – get one with 3 or 4 speeds
Lights –one light or two don’t matter, what matters is how powerful are those
Wall-Mount or Under-Cabinet – A ductless hood can be wall-mount, under-cabinet or island-mount – you have to make the decision considering your kitchen
Here are the most frequently asked questions about ductless hoods and the answers to those questions:
What is a ductless hood?
As the name suggests – these hoods come without a duct. This is why they have a very minimalistic and slim profile. More on this in the answer to the next question.
What is the difference between a ductless and ducted hood?
A ductless hood does not have a duct to vent the smoke and fumes out of the kitchen, while a ducted hood uses the duct to vent them out of the kitchen.
Are recirculating hoods any good?
These hoods are cheaper when compared with the ducted ones. However, they are not as effective at venting fumes and smoke and odor out of the kitchen as the ducted ones are.
How does a ventless stove hood work?
A ducted or ventless hood uses charcoal filters to filter all the fumes, smoke and odor, recycle them into clean air (via filtration) and then recirculate that fresh air inside the kitchen – hence no duct needed.
Do you need a vent hood for a gas stove?
That is a more like a question of personal choice. Do you like to avoid making a hole in the wall and having a big ducted range? If not, then go for the ductless one.
Before I announce the winner as per my understanding, let us take a look at this comparative table:
|Hauslane Chef Series WM-639||Convertible|
I’d say, Broan-NuTone 413004 is the best of all of them. And I would not say it only because it comes as ductless by default, but because of other factors too. In terms of features, built-quality, number of positive reviews and rating, this one beats every other hood on this list.
