You’re thinking …
Aren’t all range hoods made for gas stoves?
Well, technically you are right. All of them can work on all kinda stoves, including gas ones as well as electric ones, but since both of these stoves are different, there are some range hoods that actually work better for gas stoves, while compared with other range hoods.
Gast stoves usually make more smoke than the electronic ones – thus more grease and thus they need more powerful range hoods.

Top Rated Range Hoods For Gas Stoves
This is a review of the Top rated range hoods for gas stoves. I’ve picked 7 best range hoods for gas stoves that create moderate to extreme smoke and fumes.
These range hoods, however, belong to many other categories too. Some of them would be under cabinet, while others would be wall-mount; some of them would be ducted, while others would be convertible.
You might have read detailed reviews of a few of them already, so kindly bear with me if you get bored by a repeated review.
Before I get down to the nitty gritty of each and everyone of these range hoods, let us first take a look at the finest of them – the best picks that I’ve made based on categories other than best for gas stoves.
Broan-NuTone 413004 – Best Overall
So, this one is the best overall range hood for gas stoves – as per my understanding. Why? Well, first of all, it has 3000+ positive reviews, an Amazon’s Choice tag, very positive overall rating and then there are features and overall performance that make this one the best overall.
Cosmo 5MU30 – Best Under Cabinet
Why under cabinet? Well, if this confuses you let me make clear the concept of a category within a category. You want an ideal range hood for your gas stove – that’s one category, but then a range hood is either made for islands, to be fixed under the cabinet or they are wall-mount. This one is the best range hood for a gas stove, that can fit under a cabinet.
Hauslane Chef Series PS 18 – Best Design
In case you do not like those big, bulky and massive range hoods (no one does) that take up a lot of space, and in case if you have an eye for design, you should go for this range hood made by Hauslane. It has the best combination of design, ease of use and modern features.
AKDY RH0428 – Best Convertible
Yes, in most of the situations you want a ducted range hood for immediate, fast and easy ventilation of the smoke and fumes the minute your stove creates them. However, in certain cases, people want to be able to switch from ducted to ductless. This is one of the best convertible range hoods for that kind of people.

Now here’s the part that you were waiting for … so anxiously.
However, before I review each and every one of these range hoods, it is important totake you backstage and show how I do.
So, my reviewing framework is 3-fold. It is based on pros and cons, most important features and the answers to the frequently asked questions.
As far as reviewing criteria is concerned, I always use one or two products from a particular category, and for the rest of them I rely on expert opinions and definitely, the reviews given to those products by verified customers.
1. Broan-NuTone 413004 – Best Gas Stove Hood
This is a ductless hood by category. This means that in case you want a good range hood for a gas stove, but you do not want to go for a ductless one, this one wouldn’t be idea. In case you want a ductless hood, this one is the best.
Again, if categories and sub-categories confuse you, let me explain this hood in a simple way. This is one of the top 7 range hoods for gas stoves. In terms of installation/fixture this hood is an under-cabinet one (it’d neither be screwed to a wall nor to the ceiling). And in terms of functionality, this hood is a ductless hood. It is one of the very few ductless hoods that come ductless by default and cannot be turned into
One 75W Bulb
You must have read those angry reviews of the unhappy customers who hated how two 1.5w to 2w each bulbs on their range hoods proved to be useless and insufficient to illuminate their range hood. Well, you won’t have a problem like that with this hood because of its 75watts bulb that will illuminate 10x more than 2w bulbs,
Although this cannot be tested as to how much CFM this hood’s motor can generate (due to it being a ductless hood), it still comes with a 2-speed fan. This means that you can sync its speed with the kind of cooking you do at home or restaurant or the volume of smoke and fumes, considering whether it’d be used at home or a restaurant’s kitchen.
As I have said earlier, this is a ductless range hood – by default. This means that it cannot be changed into a ducted one unless, definitely, you customize it. To make it ductless, they send an Easy Care charcoal filter that you can always replace after a particular period of time or excessive use of the hood. The ductless hoods sucks the smoke and fumes, has them go through the charcoal filter and then recirculated the recycled and fresh air inside the kitchen. However, in terms of efficiency as well as environment-related considerations, this kind of hood is not considered ideal.
Simple Control Panel
This range hood has a very simple control panel. The control buttons are on the right side of the hood with two rocker buttons. One of them lets you switch on or off the 75w bulb (has to be bough separately), while the other one is for fan speeds. Since these are rocker buttons, you never make a mistake.
This range hood is ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant. What does this mean? It means that whatever appliances are made for people with disabilities, this range hood would be fully compatible with them.
2. Cosmo 5MU30 – Ductless Range Hood For Gas Stove
This one is listed on this review as the best ductless under-cabinet range hood. And it is made by Cosmo – the company that is known for making the best range hoods. This is a convertible hood, and its minimalistic profile blends well with the limited space available underneath a cabinet. It does not look even near as big as some other under cabinet hoods do.
As I said, this range hood has one of the slimmest and smartest profiles when it comes to under cabinet range hood. And that’s a tough category. Under cabinet range are already slimmer than other types of hoods, and this one is even slimmer than the rest of them. It is great for a beautiful kitchen with smart space where you cannot afford a big and massive Broan.
As far as this range hood’s power is concerned, I’d say the hood insert is not as powerful as it should have been for a gas stove. 200 CFM is not enough; I know that this is way more than the minimum acceptable range (75), but when it comes to different cuisine, cooking styles and places where a hood can be used (home or restaurant), you have to think bigger than 300.
Although with 200 CFM, this hood makes hardly 56dB noise (at its top speed), which is already way lower than the normal human conversation’s noise, you can still trim that with 3-speed fan. Sync the fan speed with the kind of cooking you do or tweak that just to reduce the noise pollution in your kitchen.
Reusable Aluminum Mesh Filters
This range hood does not have the kind of permanent filters that you’d notice in case of almost all other Cosmo range hoods. This one instead comes with aluminum mesh filters. There are pros and cons to both of them. Aluminum mesh filters aren’t permanent (they are still reusable to a certain limit), but they have mesh pores that are known for filtering more smoke and grease when compared with some other types of filters.
5” Round Duct Needed
Unlike many other range hoods, this one is not compatible with a 6” round duct. You need a 5” round duct instead, but this is not a big problem, because you can always tweak the hole to adjust a different size duct. You’d need a high-quality HVAC tape; this is an aluminum foil tape that is used to leakproof and tape ventilation and air conditioning ducts.
This is a Cosmo hood and the best thing about all of them (unless there is any exception), is that all of them come ducted, but they can be converted to ductless by buying a carbon filtration kit. Installation of the kit is very simple and easy.
There are 2 high lumen LED lights – 3watts each that keep your range illuminated. They might not be as good as 75watts bulb that Boran-NuTone has, but these lights work way better than the standard 1.5or 2watts ones that you usually get with such range hoods.
Just like all other Cosmo range hoods, this one also offers a 5-year limited warranty for the parts and performance of this hood.
3. Hauslane Chef Series PS 18 – Gas Stove Vent Hood
Yes. This is the hood that I consider winner in a separate and small category for best range hoods for gas stove – that are design-wise awesome. However, design is not the only reason why you should buy this range hood; the biggest reason why you should buy this rang hood is its power. It is the best CFM range hood too.
So, this is the most powerful range hood on this list. Not only this is design-wide good, but I’d call it the best CFM range hood too as far as this list is concerned. Why? Because when you need a hood for gas stove, you need optimum power because this type of stoves creates more smoke and fumes when compared to others. On top of that, consider how a gas stove being used to cook the kind of cuisines that uses more oil and spices than others and how one at a busy restaurant’s kitchen would make even more smoke. You need a hood insert as powerful as this one to beat that kind of smoke and fumes.
6 Speed Fan
Now beat this. This range hood has the highest CFM when compared to any other range hood on this list. This means that, depending on how quiet your home or office kitchen is otherwise, this range hood might make a lot of noise. However, with a 6-speed fan, you can choose 6 different noise levels. Even though the highest noise ceiling it can hit is 63.8dB, you can still reduce it to a lever way lower by opting for lower speeds.
Lemme tell you why I consider this stove hood the best design-wise hood when compared to the rest of them on this list. First of all, even though it is a ducted hood, it has a very slim and smart profile. It is not as slim and smart as of the hood that I have reviewed above, but it is still very smart and minimalistic and neat. The other thing thar makes its design cooler is a clean and neat, black-colored control display with white and big digits. The controls are touch-sensitive. You can switch on or off the hood, increase or decrease the fan speed, turn on or turn off the lights and you can tweak auto shut-off timer.
Delay Auto Shut-Off
This thing’s touch control panel let you choose a delay auto shut-off time so you can eat peacefully whatever you have cooked and your hood will ventilate the smoke even after you’re gone from the kitchen.
Three-way ventilation is simply another name for three different exhaust options. You can use this hood with a 6” round duct or a 10” x 3-1/4” rectangular duct or just simple ventilation from rear – which is just another option for 10” x 3-1/4” exhaust.
You get permanent and dishwasher-friendly stainless-steel filters with this range hood. These baffle filters have deep grooves that collect more grease and oil when compared with other filters, so you don’t have to clean them very often.
There are two lamps to illuminate your workspace for you. These are two very bright lights unlike those 1.5watts LED ones.
4. Broan PM250 – Gas Stove Range Hood
This range hood is a modern and minimalistic one; the only reason why this one is not the winner of the “best-design” category and that category is owned by the Hauslane one that I’ve reviewed above, is because its control panel is old-fashioned.
So, this one is still better than the Cosmo hood that I’ve reviewed above, but I wouldn’t consider a range hood good enough for all kind of cooking environments (in terms of cooking styles, cuisines and places e.g. home or restaurant), because anything under 350CFM is not ideal for that. Likewise, depends on how the smoke and fumes management is achieved by the makers of this hood, but 250CFM is apparently not enough for gas stoves.
Although this range hood is not a very powerful one, it still makes noise that is roughly equivalent to 8 Sones. Since we’re more familiar with dB, if we convert this to dB, it should be roughly 57.98 which is still pretty lower than 65dB which is equivalent to normal human convo. The 2-speed motor will help you dial down the noise even more.
Lighting Area for 40watts Bulbs
The enclosed lighting area (a big rectangular lamp) on this hood can house 40watts candelabra bulbs. These candle-shaped bulbs have bright yellow light when compared with white LEDs, and thus they illuminate your cooking area way better than 2watts LED bulbs.
One-Piece Aluminum Filter
The aluminum filter that you get with this hood is a mesh filter – it’s a one-piece filter. It is 100% washable (dishwasher-friendly) and reusable filter. Since it is an aluminum mesh filter, it retains more grease and oil when compared with other filters – hence less cleaning required.
Easy to Clean Hood
The hood is one of the most beautiful hoods because it is of a very slim and smart design, and because it is powder coated. The surface is very smooth, anti-fingerprints, and it is very easy to clean.
Simple Control Panel
The control panel is definitely not as advanced as it was in case of that Hauslane one, but this one’s control panel consists of only two rocker buttons. You cannot not admire the simplicity of this thing. One switch to switch on or off the lights, while the other one for speed-control.
This thing works with a 7” duct hole/round connector. The height from the range top is 24”. So keep these measurements in mind before you buy it.
5. AKDY RH0428 – Wall Mount Range Hood for Gas Stove
It’s a surprise for you, I understand, but it was a surprise for me too to find out that a convertible (from ducted to ductless hood) can be better than most of the Cosmo ones that actually come to mind whenever we think of convertible hoods. And features proves that this one deserves this title – at least for this list.
This is yet another apparently underpowered hood. 217CFM is not unacceptable, but as I’ve discussed earlier, anything less than 350CFM has better chances to failing in a trying cooking environment – for example a very busy restaurant’s kitchen.
This range hood has a powerful motor of 134watts with 3-speed fan. The hood insert is of a really high quality and even though the thing works like a charm, it only creates a maximum of 60dB noise which is way lower than 65dB which is considered normal noise for a range hood and equal to normal human convo.
This range hood possesses a lot of qualities; for example, it comes as a ducted range hood with a chimney extension kit. You can tweak the two-piece chimney to reduce or increase the size and in case you want to increase it even more in size, you can buy an additional chimney separately.
As I said, this range hood is ducted by default; however, you can change that from ducted to ductless, but doing nothing, but using the convertible carbon filtration kit. Luckily, unlike the Cosmo ones, this hood comes with the carbon filter. Just remove the other filter, install carbon filter and make sure to shift the hood from ducted to ductless mode from behind.
Aluminum Baffle Filters
The aluminum baffle filters (2 of them) that you get with this thing are reusable to a certain limit, can be washed, are dishwasher-friendly and can retain more grease or oil.
Modern Control Panel
The control panel is a modern and digital one with touch buttons for light, fan speeds and delay auto-shutoff timer etc.
2 LED Lights
This thing comes with 2 standard LED lights; they work better than most of such lights, but there are definitely exceptions – for example, Broan PM250.
So, this is a rather new entrant to the range hood manufacturers, but by the looks of things, this range hood looks amazing. Take two LED lights, a very appealing modern design and a modern control panel for example.
Now this is a relief – a real powerful range hood, made to deal with the mess that a gas stove can make. 400+CFM means that you’re in good company; you have a good hood that is can deal with smoke and fume way better than a 250 to 350CFM one.
Although this rang hood is powerful (350+ is good or above average), it does not make that much sound. At its maximum fan speed, it will make 58dB sound, which is still way lower than 65dB which is equal to normal human convo and thus considered normal for a range hood. However, you can always use lower fan speeds to bring the noise down to its lowest possible: 48dB.
Touch-Screen Control Panel
This range hood is not ideal or the best, but it definitely flaunts a lot in the faces of many range hoods made by famous companies. Take the touch screen display. It had different colors for different settings. Control fan speeds, switch on or switch off the LED lights and switch on/off the hood.
Tempered Glass Visor
What gives this hood a modern and European-like look is its tempered glass visor that looks way better than a big and bulky hood.
Made of 304-Grade Stainless Steel
Although, a 304-grade stainless steel is not as good at corrosion resistance as a 430-grade is, it is still considered very good at this job.
The hood is convertible – it can be converted from ducted to ductless and that too without having to buy a separate kit. The charcoal filters that you need for the job, are included in your purchase.
This range hood has two LED-lights. While it is not mentioned as to how many watts each of them has, they claim that their LED lights are more powerful because of having 49 individual bulbs each, while other hoods’ lights have only 15 each.
Two Aluminum Micro-Cell Filters
This hood has two aluminum micro-cell filters – more or less it is just another name for mesh filters. They’re just as useful as those.
7. Ancona Slime SD330 – Under Cabinet Range Hoods For Gas Stoves
Another new entrant to the rang hood game, but by the market response you can tell that this brand and product will stay here for a long time. We’re talking about powder coating hood, dual lights and a very sexy and slim profile.
Now this is almost a relief. Almost because 350CFM is considered good or above average CFM for a range hood. I’d say that in case of a gas stove, especially that in a restaurant’s busy kitchen, even 325 does not appear to be enough, but its acceptable.
This range hood is not noisy at all, but in case you still want to dial down the noise, you can make use of 3 fan speed settings.
2 3watts Each Halogen Lights
This range hood comes with 2 halogen lights – each of them is 3watts. This means that it will be more than enough to illuminate your range. However, halogen lights are not energy/cost effective.
Aluminum Mesh Filter
This is the same kind of one-piece filter that I’ve talked of earlier. It is washable and reusable. It contains good amount of grease in its mesh pores – hence less cleaning required.
The hood is made of corrosion-resistant stainless-steel and it is powder coated for further protection and beauty.
Simple Control Panel
The control panel consists of 5 simple buttons. These push buttons let you pick an intended speed, switch on or off the lights and switch on or off the hood.
Buyer’s Guide – How to Choose Range Hood For Gas Stove ?
What to look for when buying best range hoods for gas stoves?
Here’s a checklist.
Since gas stoves are known for making bigger mess (smoke and fumes) than the electric ones, you need a more powerful fan or motor – specifically speaking, a hood with big CFM.
The bigger the better!
So, pick a hood with 350+ CFM.
CFM is the only essential that matters when you specifically look for a range hood for a gas stove – coz you need bigger and better suction.
However, there are other things too that matter … here’s a list:
- Fan speeds – at least 3 so you can immediately ventilate the smoke while keeping the noise acceptable
- Lights – at least 2, incandescent lights and better be LEDs because they’re energy efficient
- Delay shut-off timer … so you can leave the kitchen while you hood can keep ventilating the smoke even after you’ve left
- Convertible – in case you want to shift from ducted to ductless or vice versa
- Filters … it is better if they’re permanent, either pick mesh ones or those with deep grooves
Here are the most frequently asked questions about range hoods for gas stoves.
What kind of range hood do I need for gas stove?
If you mean category, all types of range hoods (ducted or ductless, wall-mount or island) can be used for a gas stove. But you need one that has at least 350+ and ideally 500+ CFM because it is all about suction. Gas stoves make a lot of smoke; you need a powerful hood.
Do you need a range hood with a gas cooktop?
You need a range hood for all kind of cooktops, but especially gas cooktops, because they create more smoke than the electric ones.
Can you use a gas range without a hood?
You cannot use any type of cooktop without a hood. A hood is actually the fan that ventilates oil and fumes; you need it with every stove – but especially with a gas range.
Before I announce the winner of this list/category, here is a table to put things into perspective.
|Hauslane Chef Series PS 18||860|
Kitchen Bath Collection
|Ancona Slim SD330||325|
This is why I believe that with 860CFM and many other amazing qualities, Hauslane Chef Series PS 18 is the best range hood for gas stoves. As I’ve already explained above, when it comes to range hoods for gas stoves, the only major consideration is in terms of power of suction – in other words CFM.
