Top Rated Under Cabinet Range Hoods –
This is a detailed article on the under cabinet range hoods – with a review of 8 best under cabinet range hoods, a complete buyer’s guide, FAQs and comparison table etc.
Some of these products have been already reviewed in my main article (link above), so in case you find some boring similarities, kindly excuse me.
Before we jump to the review section and take a look at the pros and cons of each of these under-cabinet hoods, here are some of the best picks based on categories.
Broan-NuTone 413604 – Best of the Best
Isn’t this a shocker? I bet you were expecting a Cosmo or Hauslane. Well, hoods made by these companies definitely made it to this review, but when it comes to the best of the best, this one steamrolled the competitors with thousands of positive reviews, simple and easy design and durability etc.
Cosmo COS-QS75 – Best Convertible
Not as easily and freely convertible like a convertible car, but this range hood just takes a kit that you have to buy separately, and you can turn it from a ducted to ductless convertible range hood. Why is this important? Well, some people do not want/have space for duct and they want a ductless solution.
Cosmo 5U30 – Best Price
Not the most affordable or the cheapest, but the best price, because you always want good value for your price and this one’s price is way too low for the kind of functionality it brings to your range. At the moment of writing this review, this one is available on Amazon, for a little over $ 100.
Proline PLJW – Best Wall Mounted Under Cabinet
I know it’s quite confusing. These two are two different categories, but they’re not necessarily opposite to each other. In case you want a range hood that will fit right underneath your cabinet, but onto a wall, this is the one that can let you enjoy the perks of both categories.
Awoco RH-C06-42 – Best CFM
This a little bit technical, but in simple words CFM refers to the maximum airflow on a on a cubic feet per minute. The airflow speed matters a lot because faster the CFM sooner all the smoke and fumes will be sucked out of your kitchen. In case you need it for a restaurant, do know that this one has the fastest suction/airflow: 900 CFM.
Top 8 Under Cabinet Range Hood Reviews In 2021
|Hauslane Chef Series C100||750||Ducted|
And now what you were waiting for. Here are the reviews.
My criteria for the reviews are very simple. A few of these reviews are based on personal testing, then there are those that rely on expert opinions and I definitely considered the reviews given by verified customers too.
The structure of each of the reviews is a features, pros and cons one.
Let’s read the reviews now.
1. Broan-NuTone 413604 – Best Ductless Under Cabinet Range Hood
This one is the bestseller one and best of the best based on number of positive reviews and amazing features.
High-Quality Ductless Range Hood
The best thing about this one is that those of you who aren’t confused and don’t want a range hood that can be converted from ducted to ductless and vice versa, but definitely one that comes in a ductless form already. A ductless range hood sucks all the fumes and smoke, recycles them and then evenly spreads recycled air in your kitchen.
This range hood, just like others, also has a 2-speed fan. It would’ve been better if they provided 3-speeds like most of the Cosmo hoods, because everyone loves choices. However, a two-speed fan still makes it easier for you to pick between two settings (more suction with louder noise or moderate suction with lower noise).
LED Light with a Protective Lamp
This range hood comes with one protective lamp for one LED light (you have to buy it separately), and the wattage that it can accept at its maximum is 75 which is enough even in case of a single light. The protective lamp’s lens evenly distributes this light over your range.
Charcoal Filter Included
This type of range hoods come with charcoal filters. This one, unlike the convertible Cosmo ones, does not require you to separately buy the filters. Filters are included in your purchase. And yes, the filter is replaceable – whenever you need a new filter for best grease capture, you can get it.
Easy to Use Front Control Panel
The control panel is on the front and very conspicuous. There are two rocker switches on the control panel, which leave no space to doubt as to which setting is on. You can switch on or off the light and the 3-option fan switch allows you to keep the fan speed low or high. In case you want to switch off the hood, just let the both ends (low speed and high speed) on an equal level.
Sides Mitered and Bottom Hemmed
These hoods are made of high-quality corrosion-resistant stainless-steel. But this type of material can be very dangerous with sharp edges and corners. With mitered sides and hemmed bottom, this one does not only look clean but also keeps you safe from harm.
2. Cosmo COS-QS75 – 30 Inch Under Cabinet Range Hood
In case you’re the one who need a ducted range hood, but in case of an unforeseeable future scenario you still want it to be ductless whenever you want, this is the good to go for.
This is the best convertible range hood with a very balanced CFM. As it was mentioned in our previous article, anything above 75 CFM is considered fine or acceptable. 500 CFM means that you’d enjoy a powerful suction of smoke and fumes. Also, since it is far from 600,700 or 900 CFM, the noise wouldn’t be unbearable. In case you still find it too much, you can pick from 4 different fan speeds to get best possible suction at the lowest possible noise.
This one is a modern range hood with a modern control panel. You get a (blue) backlit touchscreen with touch-sensitive buttons that allow you to fully control this thing.
Easy to Clean
Unlike the range hood that I’ve reviewed above, this one can be easily cleaned because this comes with permanent filters – and not the disposable/replaceable ones. They call them Arc-Flow filters; they’re made of stainless steel, they’re very durable and dishwasher-friendly.
Convertible to Ductless
In case you expect to shift to another house or you’re going to renovate your kitchen and you want to be able to shift from ducted to ductless, do know that Cosmo’s optional carbon filtration kit (purchased separately) allows you to turn this ducted range hood into a ductless one.
The backlit touchscreen is not the only thing that makes this a modern range hood; other than this and its sleek and stylish design, there are other smart options on the control panel that make it a modern hood. For example, you can lock the buttons while cleaning the panel and you can set a timer for auto shut-off.
Industrial Grade Stainless-Steel
This range hood is made of 430 grade stainless-steel. This type of stainless-steel is known for its high corrosion resistance. Also, the gauge is 18 – this represents its thickness. It means that this hood is heavier and more durable than 16-gauge ones and lightweight when compared with 20-gauge ones.
3. Cosmo 5U30 – Cosmo Under Cabinet Range Hood
This is the most affordable under cabinet range hood on this list of 8 best hoods, but it’s still a Cosmo so you should expect all the best features that this range hood has to offer.
Space Saving Design
So, the best thing about this range hood is that it has a space-saving design. It is actually a very slim and sleek range hood that saves space and easily adjusts underneath any cabinet. It is super perfect in case you have a small apartment or flat.
I know this is kinda bad for this range hood, because 250 is underpowered, but it depends on the kind of cooking needs you’ve got. In case you cook for a small family and do not rely a lot on spices and too much oil etc., 250 CFM is more than enough (remember 75 CFM is not bad). But yes, if you need a range hood for a restaurant, this one will not be enough.
Behind this range hood works a 3-speed motor. The maximum sound that this machine makes is 56db. Considering that 65db is equal to normal human conversation, even the maximum noise of this motor is not too much. Reduce it one or two notches and you get one of the quietest range hoods.
Two 2W LED Lights
There are two 2W LED lights on this thing – they’re covered by the protective lamps. This means that you get low-ambiance, but enough light right on your range.
20-Gauge Brushed Stainless-Steel
Even though this one is a very affordable hood compared with the COS-QS75 one, this one is made of 20-guauge stainless-steel which makes it thicker than that one. And the grade is the same 430 – known for being corrosion-proof.
This hood comes with Cosmo’s trademarked CLEARFLOW filters. These filters are made of aluminum and they are permanent. Also, they’re dishwasher friendly so you can clean them in no time and without any hassle. They’re multi-layer mesh filter to deal with grease, oil and smoke etc.
Just like all others Cosmo hoods, this one can also be converted into a ductless range hood with an optional carbon filtration kit that you can buy separately.
5-Year Limited Warranty
Other than Amazon’s return policy, you have 5 years to claim the limited warranty on this thing.
4. Proline PLJW – 36 Inch Under Cabinet Range Hood
In case you want a wall mounted, under cabinet range hood, this is the one that you should go for.
This is one of the most slim and slick range hoods that you’d ever see. The under cabinet range hoods have this problem that all of them face; all of them are placed right underneath the cabinet, due to which they look bigger and bulkier. This range hood with its slim profile does not stick out as much as others do.
Two 1.5W LED Bulbs
There are two 1.5W LED bulbs that keep your range illuminated. These bulbs are protected by lamps that ensure that the light is evenly spread all over the range. It would have been better if the hood allowed bigger bulbs, but its still better than those that have only one bulb.
When it comes to the airflow, this one is way better than a handful of other range hoods on this list. This one has a 600 CFM airflow. This means that while you’d enjoy a suction more powerful than 250 – 40 CFM hoods, the noise would still be lower than 700 – 900 CFM hoods. To me this is the sweet spot – especially if you cannot compromise on power.
Speaking of the noise that it generates, surprisingly, this hood has one of the quietest motors. This hood, at its maximum is 5.0 Sones louder (as per the description). And when you convert Sones into dB, you notice that it is 51.21dB precisely. This makes this hood quieter than many others – so much so that the noise generated is even lower than normal human conversation.
4-Speed Dual Fan
The dual blower of this hood has 4-speed functionality. You can pick from any of the 4 speeds to keep the noise far from its maximum (51dB). The backlit buttons make it real easy and quick to switch between speed settings, even if kitchen’s light is off.
Stainless Steel Baffle Filters
This hood also has stainless steel, dishwasher-friendly baffle filters which are considered the best because they filter grease more efficiently.
5. Cosmo QB75 – Convertible Under Cabinet Range Hood
In case you want a Cosmo under cabinet hood with a very simple design and minimalistic approach, this hood would be perfect for you.
500 CFM Airflow
In terms of airflow/suction power, this one is also within the same range as the above reviewed hood. 500 CFM is more than enough – even in case you have a restaurant. The plus point is that the flow is not too much to create too much noise. At the dB noise indicator, this thing creates 65dB noise which is equal to normal human conversation.
Although that too may appear to be too much for a few people, in that case you can use this hood’s 3-speed fan to reduce the noise to one or two notches and you can still get enough airflow unless you use this hood at a restaurant where there’s too much smoke and grease to handle.
Like all other Cosmo range hoods this one can also be converted to a ductless hood from ducted; all you need is their carbon filtration kit that has to be purchased separately.
Arc-Flow Permanent Filters
This range hood also comes with Cosmo’s standard stainless-steel filters. These are called Arc-Flow filters. These filters are permanent and they are dishwasher-friendly. Due to their shape and quality of material, they easily capture grease, smoke and odor etc.
Made of High-Quality Stainless-Steel
In terms of design and style, this is a modern range hood. The control panel is on front. With one swift push you can turn on or off the blower, choose the fan speed that you like and turn on or off the LED lights. The hood is made of high-quality 430 grade stainless-steel that is known for unparalleled corrosion resistance and it is 18-gauge thick which means while it is lightweight than 20+ gauge hoods, it is more durable than 16-gauge ones.
2 1.5W LED Lights
There are two LED lights covered with protective lamps that spread their light evenly.
6. Awoco RH-C06-42 – Stainless Steel Under Cabinet Range Hood
I know that 500 – 600 CFM is the sweet spot between two extremes, but what if you run a big, busy and noisy restaurant and you want a hood with maximum CFM to deal with the kind of smoke, greases and odor that no ordinary hood can deal with? You buy this one.
Now beat this – in case you are not too much concerned with the kind of noise this thing would create and you need to manage too much smoke, fumes and odor etc., you can buy this hood because 900 CFM blower won’t let you complain.
Very Slim Profile
Even though this thing has a big blower and it will suck all the smoke and odor out of your kitchen in a jiffy, the overall look and feel of this thing is very smart and slick. It is a very slim profile under cabinet hood that would definitely not stick out too much from the cabinet.
6” Round Top Vent
This hood does not have a vent on the backside; instead of that, it has a vent on top: a 6” round vent. While 6” is the standard size for range hood vents (good on them making things easier for the customers), a vent on top is supposed to make ventilation more effective and quicker.
Coming back to the CFM thing – even though 900 CFM can be very noisy and even though not every kitchen needs this powerful a hood, this 4-speed blower makes things better for the users. Reduce the speed to its lowest and I bet that while you’d still enjoy a quick ventilation, the noise would be reduced a lot.
Blue-Lighted Soft-Touch Buttons
The blue back-lit buttons on this thing (just like in case of the above reviewed one) not only make it simple and easy to use the hood in dark or dim light, but they’re soft-touch too.
3-Minute Timer Delayed Shut-Off
other than many other options that this range hood brings to your range, there is this 3-minute timer delayed shut-off button. Press it and go back to doing whatever you were doing before and after 3 minutes the range would be automatically turned off.
3 Baffle Filters
Just like all other high-quality range hoods, this one also has baffle filters. There are 3 stainless-steel filters. They’re permanent and they’re dishwasher-friendly. You do not need any oil holders, because oil is contained in the filters.
7. Zephyr AK2100BS – Zephyr Under Cabinet Range Hood
If style and design your mantra, then you should try this amazing rang hood made by Zephyr: unarguably, one of the most stylish and modern range hoods in the market.
Filter-Less Self-Cleaning System
First of all let us understand how this filter-less self-cleaning system works. Unlike other range hoods that rely more/totally on the stainless-steel filters, this one relies totally on dishwasher-safe residue cups. All the grease and oil go to these cups that you can later clean and reuse.
The maximum airflow that you can have on this unit is 850 CFM. 850 CFM is a little over-powered, but in case you need this hood for a busy restaurant, this much power or airflow is justified considering the level of fumes and smoke and odor in a restaurant’s kitchen.
Even though this machine comes with a very powerful airflow, it is an ultra-quiet range hood and as per their statement, depending on the speed setting that you opt for, the noise that it creates is equal to 0.9 to 5 sones. This means that the maximum sound that this unit creates is from roughly 1dB to 51.21dB – which as you know, is lower than human conversation.
CFM Limit Feature
There is this exclusive feature that you can only enjoy if you buy a Zephyr hood like this one. You can limit the maximum CFM to 290 or 390 or 590 to fulfill the local code requirements. This depends on how much airflow you need to deal with smoke and fumes in your kitchen and how much noise you can tolerate.
In case you want a range hood that is just as good as any Cosmo one, with its own blend of amazing features, this particular range hood will not disappoint you.
Slim and Sleek Profile
The problem with under cabinet hoods is that because they’re installed underneath a cabinet, they cannot take too much space without sticking out too much and looking shabby. This one with smart and slim profile does not stick out as much as some others do.
Strong but Quiet Suction
This is a dual-motor range hood that creates 750CFM airflow at maximum. However, this this way above average CFM, it is yet quieter than many other hoods with lower CFMs.
This range hood was designed and made to compete with Cosmo’s best two-fan blowers, but when you look at its price, it is not comparable with expensive Cosmo range hoods.
This is one of the easiest to install under cabinet range hood that can fix under a cabinet of any size. The extractor fan duct is of a compact size which makes installation easier.
Even though its maximum speed is 750CFM, you can reduce it a few notches with a 3-speed fan. Just press a button to pick any speed and reduce the noise a few notches.
There are two LED-lights on this thing which are protected by lamps that evenly distribute those lights all over your range hood.
So, what to look for when buying under cabinet range hoods?
Here are the points that you must consider.
This is the first and the most important consideration. The size of your range hood should not only be proportionate to the size of your cabinet (which most of them have), but it should also be proportionate to the size of your range. Otherwise, either your hood would be insufficient for the range or too much for it.
CFM or airflow dictates the power of suction that a particular range hood brings to your kitchen. Low CFM (250 to 400) means that you’d have a quiet range, but it wouldn’t be enough for a big kitchen/restaurant’s kitchen. Above average (600 to 900) would be noisy.
Speaking of noise, you should always read how much sones or dB the hood will create at its maximum. 65 is the maximum bearable sound because it is equal to normal human conversation.
Convertible or Not
Is the range hood ducted or it is ductless – which kind of hood do you want?
If you may shift to a new home or renovate your kitchen, you might wanna buy a convertible (from ducted to ductless) hood.
What kind of filters are in there?
Are they charcoal ones or stainless-steel ones?
Can they be washed in a dishwasher or not?
Are they permanent or recyclable/replaceable?
750 CFM is not a big problem (noise-wise) if my range hood allows me to choose from 4 different speeds (from lowest to highest), I can enjoy fan noise (dB or sones) lower than human conversation. So, do check how many fan speeds are available.
Does this thing have sensors?
Can you lock the touch-panel while cleaning it?
Can you set an auto shut-off timer?
Is there a backlit and touch display?
Is there a remote control?
Do you need all these technologies?
Here are the most frequently asked questions and the answers to those questions.
Who makes the best under cabinet range hoods?
There is not only one company that can be mentioned here as the best manufacturer of range hoods. Cosmo and Hauslane are two companies that are known for high-quality range hoods.
Which under cabinet range hood is the best?
From this list, Broan-NuTone 413604 appears to be the best, but depending on the type of range-hood that you want, there can be other names to mention.
What is a good sone rating for an under cabinet range hood?
This depends on whether you need a hood for a restaurant or your home kitchen. However, 5 sones (51.21dB) is better because it is way lower than 65dB that is equal to normal human conversation’s noise.
What is the quietest range hood?
From this list, Proline PLJW, with only 51.21dB is the quietest of all on this list.
Is 400 CFM under cabinet range hood enough?
This depends on what do you need this range hood for. If you need it for a restaurant’s kitchen that has to deal with a lot of smoke, fumes and grease for 12+ hours, you need a hood with bigger CFM.
So, before I sum up the discussion, here is a table to put things into perspective.
|Hauslane Chef Series C100||750||Ducted|
As I’ve explained before, due to ductless ventilation the CFM really doesn’t matter in case of Broan one and that is the winner of the under-cabinet category with its amazing features.
